pete this is for you...

i am not sure how to begin the recap from today.... i think ahhhhhhhhh, is a good start!

let me go back to the beginning of my day. i woke up this morning and it felt like every other saturday, nothing unusual. i was a little excited but i am always excited to go sailing (we had bob skippering and a great crew to support him, it was also the first day in the new series, i expected great things from us). i took ari to the park to play with his friends. the sun was shining, it was beautiful out! i came back to my house and while eating breakfast i started to take apart a bike that needed a bit of work. around 9:45 i changed into sailing clothes and packed my bag. i had a disappointing ride to the bsc. there was very little ice on the road so it was a little boring and then my bike stopped shifting (great, another bike to work on).
at this point i was still in a great mood and could not wait to get out on the water. i talked to a few people while getting dressed and went out to meet blue j (i have never sailed on her before). for those of you who dont know, i like to get to the boat early in order to get to know her. i wish blue j could talk but then we may not have had an interesting day...

bruce arrived shortly after i did and pete came after that. around 11:30 pete noticed that bob had still not arrived. i went inside to use the bathroom one more time (i was trying to prevent last weeks peeing in the bucket incident). mairead was getting ready. at this point i was getting scared (i am very competitive when i know we can do well). i was hoping for a top finish for the day and without bob i was a little unsure. thank goodness pete drank decaf this morning :) (pete i love you but you are not bob and it was light wind).

positions: pete-skipper, bruce-genny/spinaker, mairead-pit, me-fordeck/hailyard (i thought with assistance from mairead but bruce took her away from me)

now we are sailing short handed but i still had hope. i was warm (i remembered my sailing jacket this week!), the sun was shining and the city looked perfect from the water. we practiced a few spin sets and take downs and it was ok. as long as the wind did not pick up, i was going to have fun! the starting sequence went off and pete got us in a great position for an amazing start (go pete)!! btw, it was a gold course (which i like, but most people dont like, i am good at reaching for some odd reason). we headed upwind and i was doing all i could to not get caught in the genny sheets, as we were approaching the mark, pete gave me tons of time to get the pole set (thanks pete!). we had a great set and as we were headed downwind i noticed most of the fleet was behind us. i think we were in 4th or 5th (truthfully i was shocked). we made it to the next mark and we pulled down the spinaker and pole without a problem then pete yelled 'what happened to the main, who released it'. my first thought was oppps, i must have stepped on it (since i am a clutz anything is possible). then mairead yelled that the halyard broke??? i rigged the main so my next thought was, what did i do wrong (even though i remembered double checking it before we raised it). now i was screaming because we were doing so well. pete would not hoist me up the mast because it was not safe and i was unsure about climbing up with snow boots on (where was cal when we needed him??). at that point we turned on the motor in order to head back in, hopefully to fix the halyard. i was still screaming out of frustration. the bsc launch pulled up beside us and told us bob was at the center (that was good news but i was still going nuts). maybe pete can describe this better...

as we pulled into the dock, john (bsc) came out to help us. he told me it would take 20 minutes and i almost died (the poor kid got an earful from hyperactive/on the verge of going nuts amy)! we had a race to get back to so he started climbing the mast as fast as he could. about 3/4 of the way up he had to take a break and i started to feel bad for him. he got the top of our mast and brought the halyard back down. the metal piece on the end of the halyard was mangled (very bent). we bent it back, taped it, thanked john and left the dock. as we were leaving the dock two big tanks were coming in. we had not missed the second race at this point!! as we got closer we watched the fleet go across the starting line for race number two. we sailed around until the start of the third race. positions stayed the same except bob was skipper, pete had the pit, and mairead took the spin halyard.

race #3 - we had a great start and took off toward the first mark. we had first place rounding the first mark but a bad pole set by me pushed us back into second place as we heading downwind. shortly after rounding the next mark we heard a loud popping noise (like someone let go of the genoa by accident). i immediately looked at the sail and it looked good then i thought "oh crap!" not again, this was as pete said a bad word! the halyard let go again!! i could not believe it. the screaming starting all over again. we tried to sail with just the genny for a little bit and then decided to head back to the dock.

we did not even finish a single race! i still had a great day. i would rather have a bad day sailing then stay inside on a beautiful saturday.

marianne, after all that, no harbor seal sightings.
